Checked October 2026 against each vendor’s own site. “Not listed” means we couldn’t find it there either way.

Pantry also: match any audio file, build kits from your library, suggest sounds for a collection, and filter to sounds you’ve never played.

Organisation beyond tagging

COSMOS is an effective tagger. Its neural network analyses audio and assigns key, BPM, instrument type, timbre descriptors, and more. Where it stops shorter is in what you do after the tagging. Browsing is primarily filter-and-scroll, with a cluster view that spatially groups similar one-shots.

Pantry layers additional organisation tools on top of its own tagging. Collections let you group samples by project, mood, or any scheme you invent. Boolean search operators (pad AND NOT ambient) let you carve precise subsets. Semantic text search lets you describe what you're imagining rather than choosing from a fixed tag vocabulary. Duplicate flagging surfaces exact and near-duplicate files so you can clean up a bloated library. These features make Pantry useful as an ongoing library management tool rather than a one-step tagger.

Collections that suggest what fits.

Install weight and ecosystem lock-in

To run COSMOS, you create a Waves account, download and install Waves Central (Waves' proprietary installer and licence manager), then install COSMOS through it. It's a multi-step process, and Waves Central remains running for licence validation. Pantry is a single application with no account, no installer framework, and no background processes phoning home. For producers who prefer lean tooling, the difference matters.

File format and duration limits

COSMOS ignores audio files longer than 60 seconds and does not support MP3. If your library includes field recordings, stem bounces, or MP3 archives, those files won't appear in COSMOS at all. Pantry has no duration limit and supports WAV, MP3, AIFF, FLAC, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus, and WMA (some formats require FFmpeg to be installed).

When COSMOS is the better choice

If you're already in the Waves ecosystem, COSMOS integrates with CR8 Creative Sampler. One click loads a sample with its metadata directly into CR8 for layering and MIDI playback. The V16 update added a DAW plugin mode, so you can search and audition samples in context with your session's tempo and key. The visual cluster view offers a spatial browsing experience that's genuinely different from list-based search, and it can surface unexpected sounds you wouldn't have typed a query for. COSMOS also includes 2,500+ royalty-free samples to get started with, and its AI tags timbre characteristics (brightness, saturation, dynamics) beyond the standard key/BPM/instrument set. If you value those qualities and work on macOS or Windows, COSMOS is a strong tool at its sale price.

Frequently asked questions

Is Waves COSMOS free?

COSMOS was originally released as a free tool in 2022, but it is now a paid product. The list price is $79, though it is frequently discounted to around $30. It is also available as part of Waves subscription bundles.

Do I need an account for Pantry?

No. Pantry has no account system at all: no login, no registration, no online activation. You download it, point it at your sample folders, and everything runs locally.

Which tags more accurately, Pantry or COSMOS?

Tagging one-shots and short loops is genuinely hard. There's not much audio to work from, and wrong analyses are common across every tool in this space. Both Pantry and COSMOS use AI-based audio analysis for key, BPM, and instrument detection, but accuracy varies by the type of sample and your library's content. The most reliable way to compare is to try both on your own library. Pantry's free tier covers 15,000 samples, and COSMOS frequently goes on sale at a discount.
